Evia Island & Limni.
Welcome to all and everyone. My name is Ray McGarry and I live with my wife Aleka on the island of Evia , in the traditional and very spectacular village of Limni in Greece.
Over the years many people have asked us many questions about Limni. What is it like ? How can I get there ? Where can I stay ? All among the most common , so I will try to answer those questions , the uncommon and much more in this blog.
What is Limni and Evia itself like ? Well , have you ever felt that you went back to a time that stood still and yet you were still able to find everything you needed on hand ? This is Limni ! 2.000 years plus of rich history and mostly unknown to tourists. Limni sits at the base of a mountain enclosed by a gulf and faces mainland Greece. The sea is crystal clear and swim just about anywhere you like on its endless beaches. While swimming you can view the magnificent view of the surrounding mountains with its deep rich blazing greenery flowing down to the sea. The Evian Straits lead directly to the open Aegean and yet the waters here are so calm , a gentle flow , a kind tranquil rhythm that soothes your very soul.
The village boasts a traditional folklore museum where you can see days long gone and imagine yourself in a different world of ancient times. Within the area are some very nice and peaceful places to stay. Make your own choice . There is one hotel on the sea promenade for those who prefer it but there are also some very quaint apartments available in surroundings you wouldn’t quite expect. Some are actually on the sea and the views they offer are pretty special.
As for shops and other facilities and amenities look no further. Although many buildings are preserved in the old and ancient style of Limni from the start , among the alleyways and all along the sea front you will discover the old mixed with the new. There are two major banks hidden away , the National bank of Greece and the Agricultural bank. A main post office , a little difficult to find but it is there if you search well enough. A medium sized supermarket is on the sea promenade and again you will have to search a little to find it , small bakers shops in the alleyways selling fresh daily bread, a host of sea front taverns offering all types of cuisine to suit all customers, local fresh meats , fresh daily caught fish , spaghetti with several sauces , octopus and ouzo , a really great variety and truly mouth wateringly tasty !
Where to go and what to do I hear you cry. Well , Limni is such a tranquil and relaxing place , quiet laid back and easy and very very enjoyable. But you can’t have too much of a good thing can you ? So for those who want to get out and about there is a host of places on the list.
A stones throw from Limni is the tiny village of Chronia . With very few inhabitants and amazing beaches it is well worth a look. There is only one tavern with minimal seating inside and out but , if you find a table that is , comes high on my list of ‘out the way’ places to eat. A little further along the road we come across the village of Rovies. Mainly a touristic area although it has good night life in the central square and lots of places to eat. Rovies has a medieval tower once a harem for a prince of the Turkish regime and well worth a peek. The tower is under renovation and will eventually offer unique apartments for those who wish to sleep in the once princes realm.
If we continue our journey along the beautiful scenic coast road we arrive at the number six best spa area in Europe namely , Edipsos. Here we can relax in any one of the many spa hotels offering every therapy known to mankind. There is a hotel on the sea front called Wellness Spa where both Sir Winston Churchill and Greta Garbo once stayed and enjoyed the wonderful though rather expensive facilities. The same spa or therapy can be found in the surrounding smaller hotels and even on the sea front where there is a public bath. The natural healing waters flow from the depth of the volcano and cascade into the sea where your therapy will cost you only two Euros per person for exactly the same treatment received elsewhere. Edipsos has a wonderful shopping area full of bargains and something for everyone, In addition you can find almost every menu to suit every taste , both reasonably priced and expensive cuisine depending on your appetite.
Most people like to visit ancient monuments or other places of interest and without going into depth I will offer a couple of sites in the north which I enjoy myself as do many others. The Church of Saint John The Russian is found in the picturesque village of Prokopi. Here lie the remains of Saint John and visitors flock in their thousands all year round to see the cask where he lays. The history of this church is far too long to mention but needless to say a visit to this holy monument is well worth.
The same can be said for the magnificent monastery of Osiou David or Saint David. High in the mountains just a half hour drive from Rovies is this truly peaceful monastery. With secret catacombs and a specific dress code for men and women to enter not to mention austere visiting times this revered monastery is a must on most tourists lists. Here you can truly see the Orthodox history and deep belief of the Greek nation. If you hire a car it is surely worth a little time out to visit this area set in the heart of the rich green forest and fauna.
Up until this moment I have described the minimum amount of things to do and places to see , so I offer you several more photographs to follow so you can simply decide if this is where you would like to visit on your next holiday and if it suits you. It certainly suits me because after ten years here I simply cannot get enough time to see it all although i see it every single day. My best wishes to you all and should you need us please write to us on email@example.com or call us on + 30 6936 776 021 and we will be very happy to answer any other questions you may have. Before I leave you access to Evia is by bridge from the mainland and the mountain drive is like being in Austria or Switzerland only much sweeter ! Write or call and we will guide you along the way. Take care. Ray & Aleka. Limni.Evia Island .Greece.
